Sapporo

The fifth-largest city in Japan, Sapporo is on the Japan's northernmost island, Hokkaido, the showcase of stunning natural landscape extending over scenic coastal areas, dramatic mountain ranges and the mysterious lakes and volcanoes. August is the best season to visit the city known for low humidity in summer. Conveniently situated close to the city of Sapporo, New Chitose Airport (CTS) has regular international flights from Seoul, Hong Kong, Taipei, Shanghai, Beijing and Guam, as well as connecting flights via Japan's main international airports at Narita, Nagoya, and Kansai.

Hotel Information

As the meeting falls on the top tourist season in Hokkaido, we have selected several hotels of varying classes along the subway lines that is easily accessible to the conference hall for the Optical MEMS participants. General Information

All foreign visitors entering Japan must have a valid passport. Participants from countries requiring a visa should apply to the Japanese consular office or diplomatic mission in their country prior to departure. For details, participants should contact their local travel agents or consular offices.

Currency Exchange

Only Japanese yen is accepted at regular stores and restaurants. Foreign currency exchange is available at the airports, leading banks and hotels on presentation of your passport. Bank business hours are form 9:00am to 3:00pm, Monday through Friday.

Traveler's Checks and Credit Cards

Traveler's checks are not as popular in Japan as in other countries and are accepted only by banks and major hotels in principal cities. Major credit cards (Master Card, Diners Club, Visa, American Express) are widely accepted at hotels, department stores, shops and restaurants.

Tipping

There is no custom of individual tipping in Japan. Tips are usually included in the bill as a service charge, if needed.

Electrical Appliances

Japan operates on 100-110 volts for electrical appliances. The frequency is 50 Hz in eastern/northern Japan, including Sapporo. The power receptacles are the same type as the ones used in the United States. European residents are advised to bring a plug adapter.

Insurance

Conference organizers will not accept responsibility for individual, medical, travel or personal insurance, and participants are advised to take out their own insurance policies.

Climate

The climate is cool in Sapporo during the period of the conference with the average temperature beween 19.2C and 26.9C in early August.

Access to Sapporo

With several international and domestic air routes connected to Sapporo / New Chitose Airport (CTS), the city is quite accessible destination for convention delegates and tourists.
